D.J. Peebles
Interim Registrar

To all CMTBC Registrants

I’d like to take this opportunity to provide a further update on our restructuring activities at the College of Massage Therapists of British Columbia (CMTBC). These restructuring activities are being undertaken in order to better achieve the objective of protecting the public interest as it relates to our profession, and to enhance our services to you, as a Registered Massage Therapist.  The recruitment process for a new Registrar is currently underway, a number of you have suggested individuals for the role, and we are looking forward to the process being completed sometime in January.

As part of the organizational review process, the Board of Directors has been looking at how we go about doing the work of the College and meeting all of our statutory obligations under the law.  Up to now, much of the work has been done by active volunteers – those RMTs who give of themselves in order to achieve the objectives of the College and ensure the viability of our self-regulated profession.  Aside from the fact that these individuals are making a substantial sacrifice of their own time (often at the expense of family and career), it is not an inexpensive model as the College reimburses for travel costs and income loss through a per diem system.

The Board has looked to other self-regulating professional bodies, and has decided to reorganize its operations by creating a small number of professional staff positions that will, in effect, undertake many of the responsibilities currently performed by volunteers.  The professional staff, headed by the Registrar/CEO, will report to our Board of Directors and continue to take their direction from the Board.  Having a professional staff group will enable us to provide continuity even as the Board changes from time to time, as all Boards do because of elections and government appointments.

We expect the new structure to cost approximately the same as our current structure, as expenses relating to travel, per diems, outside consulting fees and legal fees will now be shifted to salaries for the new professional staff.

Therefore, in addition to the new Registrar/CEO, we will be recruiting for the following positions:

Deputy Registrar – Professional Practices (this is not a new position but a realignment of the work of the current Deputy Registrar)

Director – Compliance (this position brings in-house a number of responsibilities currently performed by active volunteers and lawyers)

Director – Corporate Services (this position provides accounting and technical support to the College which is required if we are to effectively service our expanding registrant base)

Postings for these three positions are attached for your information.

While all these positions are important, I would like to draw particular attention to the Deputy Registrar role.  The Board has stated that a requirement for this position is eligibility for registration as a Massage Therapist. This is a full time position and will be based in our Vancouver office.  If you have any suggestions, or if you are interested, please communicate directly with our executive search consultants, as directed in the attached postings.

If you have any questions on any of the restructuring, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Thank you.

On behalf of the Board of Directors,
D.J. Peebles
Interim Registrar
